NMFS PROHIBITS RETENTION OF PACIFIC COD IN THE WESTERN REGULATORY AREA OF THE GULF OF ALASKA

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is prohibiting retention of Pacific cod in the Western Regulatory Area (Statistical Area 610, between 159 degrees and 170 degrees W. longitudes) of the Gulf of Alaska, effective 1200 hrs, Alaska local time, July 31, 2000, according to James W. Balsiger Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

This prohibition of retention of Pacific cod in the Western Regulatory Area includes vessels catching Pacific cod for processing by both the inshore and offshore components of the fishery.

This action is necessary because the amount of the 2000 total allowable catch of Pacific cod in this area has been achieved and is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.20(d)(2).

NMFS is requiring that catches of Pacific cod in this area be treated in the manner as prohibited species and discarded at sea with a minimum of injury.
