The Office of the Federal Register filed today an emergency rule implementing changes to the 2002 Alaska groundfish fisheries that are determined necessary by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to protect endangered Steller sea lions. The emergency rule also establishes 2002 harvest specifications for the federally managed groundfish fisheries off Alaska and is effective January 1, 2002, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

The text of the emergency rule as filed by the Office of the Federal Register is scheduled to be published January 8, 2002. Until the rule is published, a draft version of the rule is available on the NMFS, Alaska Region website at http://www.fakr.noaa.gov/frules/ssladvance.pdf.
