NOAA Celebrates 30 Years of Service
Public Invited to Open House at Weather Forecast Office and Auke Bay Laboratory

Employees of the local offices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration extend a cordial invitation to citizens of Juneau to attend their open house "birthday party" on October 5, 2000 from 3-7 p.m. to celebrate NOAA's 30 years of service to the public. Visitors will be hosted at two NOAA work sites: the National Weather Service Juneau Forecast Office at 8500 Mendenhall Loop Road and the National Marine Fisheries Service Auke Bay Laboratory at 11305 Glacier Highway.

"Come visit the new Weather Service Forecast Office on Back Loop Road for a look at our past and to take a guided tour of this modern facility," said Laura Furgione, Meteorologist in Charge. "You will have the opportunity to look at weather instruments, view current satellite images of our area, see the latest computer technology in action, learn about the information available through our web site, and receive information on becoming a Juneau Weather Spotter."

"Come meet the scientists who conduct research on living marine resources, tour the laboratory, and explore the hands-on touch tank filled with a variety of living marine creatures including sea stars, anemones, crabs, and sea cucumbers," said Michael Dahlberg, Laboratory Director.

Juneau is home to two of NOAA's six agencies. The other four agencies are the National Ocean Service, the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service, the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, and the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations.

The National Weather Service (NOAA Weather) is charged with providing weather, water, and climate warnings and forecasts. They are a team of dedicated individuals who daily continue a tradition of service above self. Over the last several years, their collective focus has been on delivering necessary products and services while completing the myriad of activities associated with the NOAA Weather modernization and restructuring. Their new observing systems (space, radar, and ground); modern information technology assets; and training programs have combined to improve the quality of their products. By working with key partners, especially the emergency management community, they have been striving to ensure their products and services are responsive to the needs of the American public.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) administers NOAA's programs which support the domestic and international conservation and management of living marine resources. NOAA Fisheries provides services and products to support domestic and international fisheries management operations, fisheries development, trade and industry assistance activities, enforcement, protected species and habitat conservation operations, and the scientific and technical aspects of NOAA's marine fisheries program.

Refreshments will be served. For directions or additional information, call Carol Tocco at 586-7032.
