NOAA Fisheries launches Steller sea lion research website

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) has launched a new website, http://stellersealions.noaa.gov, dedicated to Steller sea lion research in Alaska.

"Scientists are making an enormous effort to discover why the western population of Steller sea lions continues to decline," said Jim Balsiger, Regional Administrator for NOAA Fisheries in Alaska. "This website will let people see scientific results as they become available."

The website will not only tell the breaking scientific information, it also holds background information about sea lions. The website contains two areas of focus, research and management, for Alaska's Steller sea lions.

In March, NOAA Fisheries held an orientation and coordination meeting for scientists and researchers on Steller sea lions in Alaska. About 120 principal investigators, backed by at least 11 governmental and private organizations, attended the meeting. Information from their investigations will be available through the website.

The website contains pages prepared by the National Marine Mammal Laboratory, the National Marine Fisheries Service Regional Office in Juneau, the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, and the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.

The principal website managers, NOAA Fisheries employees Marina Lindsey and Susan Calderon, can be reached through E-mail at the website, http://stellersealions.noaa.gov.

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) is dedicated to protecting and preserving our nation's living marine resources through scientific research, management, enforcement, and the conservation of marine mammals and other protected marine species and their habitat.
